At Home-Start Bracknell Forest we know that positive early experiences can make a huge difference to a child’s life. Our staff and volunteers help local families with young children by providing non-judgemental personal support for parents in their homes and in group activities.

We are seeking a committed and talented Chair to lead our Trustee Board when our current Chair steps down next year.

The Chair is a voluntary position providing strategic leadership to the Charity to further our vision and mission. This includes developing the Board of Trustees, ensuring effective governance of the charity, working with stakeholders and providing support and challenge to the Head of Services in implementing our strategy.

What we are looking for someone who can bring

  • Experience as a charity Trustee, you don’t need to have been a Chair, but you do need an understanding of charity regulations and governance.
  • Commitment to Home-Start values and a passion for supporting families and giving children a better start in start in life
  • An inclusive leadership style demonstrated at a senior board or executive role – able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing
  • Judgement and vision to operate effectively at strategic level
  • Strong numeracy skills and ability to understand accounts with the support of the Treasurer
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to encourage challenge and debate and to foster sound, informed decision-making by the Board.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life – selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

Ideally, you will also have an understanding of business management, company reporting and charity accounting.

Time commitment

The number of hours required is variable and flexibility is needed to be able to respond to situations that arise unexpectedly that need advice, guidance, approval or resolution.

Trustee meetings are held in the evening, approximately every two months, although the Chair will be required to attend further meetings with the Head of Service, Trustees, funders and other stakeholders during the year. The Chair is currently supported by 2 co-Vice Chairs who help to spread the workload.

If you could be our next Chair, please email office@hsbf.org.uk to receive a full application pack.
